Meet Our New VC Fellow Shirley Wang!
When it comes to hiring at JourneyOne, skills obviously matter but creativity, REAL hustle, passion for the work, and an entrepreneurial mindset are key things we look for that separate the good from great.
Here’s a shortlist of why Shirley rocks:
Former startup founder of a Gen-Z-led impact marketing agency, Hackrah Media
Previously worked in operations, marketing and program management at Techstars Boston, Foundess, and NYC B2B
Yup! She’s done all of these amazing things and is still a Senior at Northeastern University (majoring in Business + Entrepreneurial Startups)
Welcome to the @JourneyOne team! 🎉We’re so lucky to have you!
What is your superpower in venture? Why do founders and investors come to you over other people when they need advice or help?
My superpower in venture is rooted in a genuine people-first approach. I believe this business is about building meaningful relationships and being a trusted ally to founders. That means taking the time to understand their unique challenges and aspirations, and helping them navigate the ups and downs of their journey. If I can’t directly be of support, there’s someone in my network who can. At the end of the day, every founder deserves someone in their corner with a roll-up-their-sleeves attitude who wants to see them succeed.
What is something that you experienced while working at JourneyOne that made you feel very excited to be a part of the team?
Working at JourneyOne has been exhilarating, particularly because of the firm's bold approach to frontier markets. It’s been incredible to learn from Helene and Sarah, who both have the sharpest ability to identify and empower pioneering founders who challenge the status quo. Beyond the typical sourcing and due diligence work as a venture fellow, I've had the rare opportunity at JourneyOne Ventures to delve into LP fundraising and communications, from developing investment theses to helping build the angel syndicate.
What is something that most people don’t know about you that takes years to find out?
I grew up in a small manufacturing town in southern China.
What are your top 3 wellness routines that you can’t live without?
Spa and massage day once a month
Saturdays are for taking myself out to a cafe or library and reading a book
Cooking pasta at home
What is your favorite quote and why?
Shoot for the stars - if you fail, at least you’ll land in the clouds.
